Why are flowers given for those who've died, but also used for valentines, birthdays...etc.?

Recently, I lost a dear friend to cancer and at his memorial saw a lot of beautiful flowers. Why do we give flowers for all types of occasions that usually are celebratory, but also for memorials, deaths...

Why are flowers given for those who've died, but also used for valentines, birthdays...etc.?
I think it's because flowers are special elements that help us describe our feelings for someone. For Valentine, we would bring flowers to a special someone, On mother's day also. In that case it explains our deepest feelings, and love for that someone. And, For deaths and memorials it also means the same thing, like you miss the person and also sympathy.
Reply:They're just pretty gifts. It just became traditional to send them to anybody you want to console or to help them celebrate. They're just a generic positive gift.
Reply:Flowers are nice. Everybody loves being around a collection of the severed reproductive organs of angiosperms.

On sad occasions, they help to lighten the mood. On happy occasions, they increase the happiness.
Reply:Tradition. Why it started though, not sure.
Reply:Different colors have different meaning. Red roses is used for love, White and yellow are used for friendship. Just depends on which flowers they give.
