Reply:You can do any mixture of things, depending on if you want flowering plants, non-flowering plants, annuals, or perennials. I like to use Rose Moss, the plant has multi-colored small flowers and does really well in hot climates and full sun. Depending on how much you use, it can be made to spill out of the basket. Another idea is to use Wandering Jew, you can get this plant in many variations. I like to use wide leaf wandering Jew (Purple and Green) in the middle and then plant small leaf Jew all around the sides (which will also spill over the sides). This plant is usually available at nurseries and may even be available if you have a greenhouse at a local high school. It is very easy to propagate and pretty low maintenance.
Reply:Most garden centres will do multi-packs for hanging baskets. They will work out the cheapest as a backbone for your basket. This will leave you a bit of money to spend on a few choice plants.

Lets say your basket it for full sun and about 12/14 inch. wire basket which means side planting. Please tell me if this is not the case and I will edit my post.

Cut a circle of plastic and place in the bottom of the basket to stop it drying out. Put a layer of compost in that you have mixed a slow release plant food in (osmocote or similar)

Use you bargain plants (5 or 6) around the outside of the basket.

Stagger them, one up, one down and try to mix foliage plants with flowering. This will make the basket look full and lush. Fill with more compost as you go.

Choose an upright Pelargonium (geranium)for the top. They come in so many colours and some have interesting leaves as well. They are the best plant for a hot spot and will flower constantly as long as regularly deadheaded.

Now plant three plants around the outside of your basket. Verbenas are a great filler for this as they will fill everything, shoot out, up and down making the top look very full. Pick a nice contrasting colour to the Pelargonium but make sure they are all the same colour. Use whatever plants you have leftover from your bargain bedding boxes in the top around them. Water well and hang somewhere to start growing.

Hopefully you will end up with something like this...
